Background of the Study

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is a critical component in modern healthcare, integrating clinical expertise with the best available research evidence and patient preferences to enhance patient outcomes. In nursing, EBP empowers practitioners to make informed decisions, leading to improved healthcare quality and patient safety.

Science and Education Publishing

Undergraduate nursing education plays a pivotal role in equipping future nurses with the knowledge and attitudes necessary for EBP. A positive attitude towards EBP among nursing students is essential, as it fosters a willingness to engage with current research and apply it in clinical settings. However, several studies have identified gaps in nursing students' knowledge and attitudes towards EBP. For instance, a study assessing nurses' knowledge, perception, and attitude towards EBP highlighted the need for enhanced educational strategies to improve EBP competencies among nursing students.

Science and Education Publishing

In Kano State, Nigeria, the integration of EBP into nursing education is crucial for developing competent healthcare professionals capable of delivering high-quality care. However, there is limited research focusing on the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students in this region concerning EBP. Understanding these factors is vital for developing targeted educational interventions that promote EBP adoption among future nurses.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of EBP in nursing, there is evidence suggesting that undergraduate nursing students may possess inadequate knowledge and hold unfavorable attitudes towards EBP. This deficiency can hinder the effective implementation of EBP in clinical practice, potentially compromising patient care quality. A study examining nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding EBP found that misconceptions and lack of familiarity with EBP principles were prevalent among nursing professionals.

SCIRP

In Kano State, the extent to which undergraduate nursing students are prepared to engage in EBP remains unclear. Without a comprehensive understanding of their current knowledge levels and attitudes, educational institutions may struggle to design curricula that effectively promote EBP competencies. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students in Kano State towards EBP, thereby informing educational strategies to enhance EBP integration in nursing practice.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of undergraduate nursing students in Kano State regarding Evidence-Based Practice.
  2. To evaluate the attitudes of these students towards the adoption and implementation of EBP in clinical settings.
  3. To identify factors influencing the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students towards EBP.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of knowledge of undergraduate nursing students in Kano State concerning Evidence-Based Practice?
  2. What are the prevailing attitudes of these students towards the implementation of EBP in their future nursing practice?
  3. What factors contribute to the variations in knowledge and attitudes towards EBP among nursing students?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Undergraduate nursing students in Kano State have a moderate level of knowledge regarding Evidence-Based Practice.
  2. The majority of these students hold positive attitudes towards the implementation of EBP in clinical settings.
  3. Factors such as exposure to research activities, curriculum content, and clinical experience significantly influence students' knowledge and attitudes towards EBP.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on undergraduate nursing students enrolled in accredited nursing programs within Kano State. It assesses their knowledge and attitudes towards EBP and explores factors influencing these attributes. The study's limitations include its cross-sectional design, which may not capture changes over time, and the reliance on self-reported data, which could be subject to response biases. Additionally, the findings may not be generalizable to nursing students outside Kano State or to practicing nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Evidence-Based Practice (EBP): A problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making that integrates the best available scientific evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences.
  • Knowledge: The information and understanding that nursing students possess about EBP principles and processes.
  • Attitudes: The perceptions, feelings, and predispositions that nursing students hold towards EBP and its implementation in clinical practice.
